This was delightful and brought back memories. I too loved school. And especially the before school part of collecting supplies. Secret-not-a-secret even though I'm now in the Nana stage of life I still love August and shopping the school supply section at the store.

These pinwheels look fun and delicious. And my husband loves horseradish so I'm sure it will be a bit hit! Thanks for sharing.

Your mention of the Scholastic Book Club took me back! The Book Fairs in grammar school were the best!

If I may, I'd like to suggest an alternative for the red onions in your delish recipe. I understand why it's there (adding a little sharp bite to list of rich ingredients), but some of us don't tolerate them very well.

I've discovered that red onions, thinly sliced, rinsed, then tossed with a splash of rice wine vinegar (and left to marinate for 30 or more minutes) (and so, in other words, lightly pickled) provide that bit of sharpness (and acidity) without the unpleasant after effects.

The rice wine vinegar isn't very Mediterranean (but then, neither am I), but balsamic vinegar can also be used.

Thanks Alan—great suggestion! I am also not a big red onion fan. I have done a quick pickle before but not with rice vinegar; thats sounds great. I did find using the herbs and skipping the onion entirely was a perfect taste for me.

Yes, the start of a new school year! I loved it when I was in school and loved it when I homeschooled my kiddos. There is something new, fresh, and exciting with the start of each school year and the crack of that first book binding. It’s only my youngest now that is still in college but I continue to feel the shift come September 📓📝

With no kids we missed all of the reliving of our school days. I think it’s made me even more nostalgic!

I was exactly the same. Full of hope every September. It still makes me hopeful, even now.

I don't know *quite* how you do it Elizabeth. Oddly, I was a little nervous opening the app this morning, I haven't had time to read so many posts and was feeling guilty for missing so much. And also strangely left out... Other writers were doing these wonderful things throughout August and I couldn't join in.

Anyways, this was the perfect read to welcome me back in. Literally just what I needed. Thank you 😊

Shell, that makes me so happy to hear! Truly 💕

And just think: you’ve had a lovely month, with travel and family and good times to restore you. I do think your feeling is so much a part of the insidious nature of all social media—that FOMO and sense that we’ve lost our place in the race. Thankfully Substack, at least still, gives us an opportunity to go back to our friends and favourites easily. Welcome back!

Thank you Elizabeth! Oh my gosh you are spot on about social media. It does feel like a race! I never struggled with FOMO so acutely until it came along. Being aware of that is helpful because you are absolutely right, a summer of fun and happiness is so valuable! I know of some parents who turn it off entirely for August, which is something I am considering for next year.

I'm very pleased Substack allows us to reconnect easily. Pleased to be back, and I hope you had a lovely summer too!
